For many years, the Polish system of oppressive rule PRL, completely understood by artists, intellectuals and businessmen, was undergo to be subject to censorship and surveillance. Communist system, where rule only one party, took his strength primarily from the effective use of security service and different kind oppression, and even more effective propaganda.
The acquisition of complete control over the media, and as far as possible the creation of the cultural mainstream, was the most important element of the overall strategy to control the population. It is not surprising that in such conditions a completely free and independent intellectual and cultural centers, constituted a very important part of the resistance movement – independent, and often underground circuit was the only possible way to sold some ideas, thoughts and messages. In this regard, the role of the Church, Theater and Universities is not to undermine during the fight against the communist regime.

Any form of limit and censor the work of independent authors were undoubtedly very well developed in the communist time, and therefore one of the most important achievements of the political transformation, taking place in Poland through the Round Table, was to free artists from the burden of censorship. It certainly enabled many developers go out of the underworld, but also allowed to many cultural institutions bolder and more modern interpretation of art. Polish National Theater been for a long time associated primarily with classical and very patriotic works – in this way the mission was carried out, involving the historical education and national society. In today’s circs, expectations of average theater consumers are far higher than it was thirty years ago, as evidenced by both are emerging still competitive private theaters, and a fact that is still changing repertoire of national theaters.

Let off too brave and breaking some taboo theatrical performance, or simply speaking bravely about difficult things related to art, is still risky – not because of censorship constituted by law, but because of social expectations. Finally, discontent and indignation of a group of people is able when properly publicized media cases, lead to the remove from the scene. Of course, this social censorship usually doesn’t occur in strongly liberal societies, where no values and cultural and social hypotheses are not alien or don’t have a badly received.

In the more conservative and traditional closed communities, willing to accept even slightly scandalous title it is already very low. And if the government or other state administration services will be lead by the people favorable to such a way of thinking, very quickly can cause the formation to restrict freedom of expression among artists, writers, musicians and actors. However it is known, that regardless of the brutality and determination censors, art will always find a place for themselves and access channels to consumers, who want to stay in touch with her.
